I took these images using the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone 4. Hipstamatic is an iPhone app that allows you to adjust various lenses and films, providing the ability to spontaneously create unique looking photographs. I took photographs of various trees around me because I felt a kinship with their growth cycle. At times they are bare and straggly looking, at other times, bursting full of leaves and blossoms. At all times they are full of life, even if it is not obvious to the eye.
I then used the inkjet transfer method to print my photos. I wanted to play with the idea of using alternative methods of printing while pushing the boundaries of photography with an alternative method of taking photographs. The results are dreamy, painterly photographs that straddle the line between photography and creative craft.
When I began this portfolio, I was experiencing a creative dry spell, one that ran wide and deep. I could not find my creative voice, and I attempted to use a simple method to try and rediscover my own connection to my creative self. It was easy to take photos of trees using my iPhone, which was handy and with me at all times. Using Hipstamatic forced me to think about what I saw in front of me. Printing with the inkjet transfer method allowed me to reconnect to the physical act of creating and of using my hands to create art. I discovered how much I missed connecting to the physicality of art. Although my creative dry spell is still quite persistent, I finally felt that this portfolio helped me identify myself as being a creative person.
